Do Screen Savers Really Save?
The answer is no, screen savers do not save any energy at all. Even if it’s those plain, black ones with the microsoft symbol bouncing around. The screen saver’s job was originally to prevent older computers from having screen burns, or where the word “imprinted” on the screen. (more info) Now, it basically has no function except to sit there and entertain you. Think about it, is it really worth it to have little designs floating around your screen for your entertainment? I’m sure you can easily turn off the monitor and do something more worthwhile! It doesn’t take that much energy for you to push a button… use it to save your computers energy because…

…you CAN make a difference! :)

Please Comment, we would really appreciate it!

They don’t save energy? Then why do they call it screensavers, so misleading –;;. I always assumed that they did. If screensavers don’t help, what should you do to save energy?

  2. computersneedsleeptoo Says:

You can turn off the monitor, or even better, set the computer in a mode where it automatically sleeps after a desired amount of time!

Yes, sleep mode does save energy!
When you are using a computer, it uses 95-330 watts.
If you put it on sleep, it uses 1-21 watts!
    That is a big difference!

  7. Kristen Says:

How much money is 95-330 watts?

lorraine, basically everything that uses energy releases a byproduct that is usually polluting the air and decreasing the air quality. But when not in excess energy use is not that harmful. Where do you think you get your energy from?

  16. playakillaz29 Says:

wowwwww, screensavers arent much of a help at all they should just shut off and save some energy because i think that will help your computer save energy

  17. computersneedsleeptoo Says:

They were called screensavers because it was originally used to protect images from the screen to be imprinted onto the computer screen.

But of course, this was only for old computers since this wouldn’t happen to our computers now.
